Summing point is at listening location. If monitor placement is symmetric in symmetric room, then both monitors have same bass frequency and phase response. Aligning subwoofer phase with one of the monitors means, that that alignment works for both monitors.

 

With unsymmetric room or monitor placement, the monitor and subwoofer sum can be only perfect with one monitor. We generally recommend aligning the phase with nearest monitor nearest to subwoofer.
