My new 8331's

hi
I have been a user of the venerable 8030A's for over a decade. These have served me very well and still sound amazing.
I decided to upgrade to the 8331's and they arrived last week. These are connected via analogue.

Out of the box these speakers sound great, if a little bass heavy.

My studio space is far from ideal. I mainly write electronic post punk music and have gotten used to the sound of the room and mix and master using a known good record. Basically I know what a decent mix should be and try and match this. This approach works quite well but was hoping to be able to totally mix analytically.

I have GLM and ran calibration. I was pretty shocked as the sound was now devoid of bass and quite toppy.

My room has lots of keyboards in it and as I say is not great acoustically but it's the room I got.

My question. Maybe the software cannot properly adjust for all the stuff already in my room. And apart from getting another room, is there anything I can do to make things better. Maybe i'm so used to a certain sound that the result was correct and i'm not used to that, but it was devoid of bass.

Best regards
Alan

Hi Alan! Rick Wakeman is alive! ;-)

Great rig of keyboards. And I can guarantee you that this is not the problem regarding the bass range. You already named it: you are so used to the boosts of your room - and calibration just sounds thin at the beginning, although it is correct. Can you please create a GRADE report (Services menu > GRADE Report Order) and send it to us under support@genelec.com? I can then have a look at it in detail.

You can already just use Group Preset > Sound Character Profiler to get more warmth / bass by reducing mid and high frequencies ...

I'm also wondering if this is an equilateral triangle for the speakers, it looks very wide ...

    Greetings,
    Marcel

    hello

thanks for the reply and support. Really appreciate it. Yes I have lots of synths picked up and repaired over the years. The space has evolved and now serves as recording, studio and repair. The range of sounds they can produce is quite impressive. If only my playing was as good as Rick's;)

I'll run that report later and post it up. I now have the 8331's better situated so should help. I'm just such a novice at this and find it hard to get the reference result that I can count on over and over. Out of the box that sound amazing and have more detail than my 8030 as well as no need for a sweet spot. I'm already highly impressed.

    best
    Alan
