GLM: Digital with GML volume control, Analog on Preamp with fixed volume

My system serves two purposes:

- Mac mini fetches music from NAS, runs GML, has it's own Group in GML "Music", AES-EBU Digital to Genelecs, Volume control with Genelec remote: works perfectly

- TV sends Dolby Digital to a Dolby Preamp, GML Group "Cinema", Analog to Genelecs, Volume control with the Preamp (as there are non active speakers except front and center).

Problem with this setup is, that the GML-Group does not store the Volume, so when switching groups from Music to Cinema I manually have to set the GML Volume to let's say -10 to match the level with the non-active speakers.

Is there any way to improve this to use the Genelecs with a Preamp without GML Volume Control (with Mac/GML still running)?

Hi Jason! You can store the "Group Sensitivity" to every group which is a general level offset. Just go for Group Preset > Edit ...

Thanks for your reply! I do not see, how this solves the problem though.

I will try with an example:

Let's say, the Dolby PreAmp has calibrated all it speakers and for calibration, GML "Cinema" has been volume control has been set to -10. (or with volume to max and group sensitity turned down like you suggest). Either will work.

A normal listening day: "Music" from NAS, using volume control, assume -42 as volume. Go to dinner, than start "Cinema" preset. The volume will still be at -42, because the volume is not stored in the presets - anymore I need to add, because years ago that had been the case. So you manually need to switch group and set volume for analog. Volume control during the film is then via the PreAmp.

Remark: ideally, thinking about it, this might be something for the wishlist: Genelec is able to detect if there is an analog oder digital input available and can switch automatically, right? What if there would be a setting in GML to tell GML to use the volume control on digital input and to disable the volume control on analog (acting as an amp only, to work in a preamp-setting). This would be very useful, removing the need to go to the Mac to manually switch/adjust volume, in everyday life all would work just with the little genelec remote.

Hi Jason! I thought that you would switch groups with GLM. Indeed, if you store group settings to the speakers for stand alone use, there is only ONE startup level and max. level restriction that can be set for the analog AND the digital input. Same is true for the volume control in general, it will not offer different level offsets for analog or digital. I'll share your feedback with our R&D team for sure.

Thanks for sharing with the R&D-Team.

Let's take this further: if I would change groups with GML though, let's say having played Music with -42 (or -30 or -50) and switching to the Cinema group, this switches the input (and has maybe a different calibration behind); it would not switch the volume to a given value (the value it has been running the volume calibration on the Dolby PreAmp for all speakers, Genelec and other). This is the behaviour I mentioned, some years ago, this was the case, nowadays, it is not.

Hi Jason! Yes, this was changed some time ago to prevent level jumps while switching groups. You could of course still use a level preset ... Greetings!

Yes, and that is completely understandable in a studio. I just wish, Genelec would leave a bit more options in the Software to activate for "special" cases or home instead of studio use. Should not be difficult to add.

Again, thanks and I'll wait if something might be added in the future.
